Fairy Tales…I have always sought out the original, non-Disney versions. These tales were warnings for children. No…don’t go in the woods! It’s full of wolves and other things that will eat you up. Beware of scary people along the road. Keep your promises or pay the consequences. So many useful ideas. But the Beyond Fairytales line is a whole different thing. Focused on the romantic elements while still keeping the spirit of the tales.

I am working on  my story yet…Death’s Messengers. Which naturally lent itself to a tale of a grad student slash goatherd and three gorgeous men… Is she destined to be their Mistress?

Here’s a bit from it:

Once Upon a time, Death made her way along the high rock path above the ocean. Her aged limbs creaked and protested, but her job waited for no man. The narrow, steep trail was a trial for the old thing and she bemoaned the hot weather and long distances she traveled each day. Her quarry lay many miles ahead and as she journeyed the sun lowered in the sky. Soon darkness would descend and her busy time arrive.

Why so many met their end at night, she did not know. Only that they did and she had to be there to collect their souls or they would be trapped in their rotting flesh forever. If humans realized that they would be quicker to greet Death and less protesting. It was for her to fetch the immortal part of  mortal man and return it to the gods.

As the shadows lengthened, she drew her long, dark cloak tighter around her shoulders and forced her aching legs to move faster.  Although it was not cold, she felt the need for the safety of her garment’s voluminous folds.

The caverns loomed deep and dark to her right, the sheet cliff to the dark blue waters to her left. Immortal didn’t mean unable to be hurt, as her throbbing knees assured. If she were to fall off the edge, she’d be in great pain, her job would still need to be done, and she’d have to do it while agony surged through her bones.

The caverns held untold horrors, but none had so far come forth to challenge her this night.

Tomorrow, please look for a post from Sara Daniel.

  2. I love the visual of Death being an old woman, tired and achy from way too many souls departing this Earth (and whatever other places are out there). I’m so happy I took all the pills lol
Be back in a bit for the super secret word 😉
PS: Sorry, I know this isn’t the place for it but dang (is that a NSFA word? 😛 ) I just can’t shake Terci In Chains from my brain! It’s one of my very favorite books ever ❤

    • I am so happy you liked Terci! I am currently writing Phil’s story…Agent in Chains 🙂

      • Oh wow! I loved Phil, he was so much fun! One of the things I loved about Terci was the behind the scenes stuff, reading about authors at a convention was so cool… and, of course, hot sex 😀
Agent In Chains is definitely on my ‘To Be Read’ list! No pressure or anything 😀

I like this sample because it keeps some of the mythic language that I associate with fairy tales, but modernizes it a bit. I think there’s a timeless magic in the language of the Grimms or Anderson, and it lends weight to the story. I can’t wait to read the whole story.

  6. Dearest Kate, before I annoy The Queen Of All Spoons Wooden anymore than I already have, I’m biting the bullet and taking one for the team on this: {clears throat and adds padding to my jeans} are we just missing the Secret Word, is it hidden in plain sight? I’m, umm, asking for a friend, yeah, that’s it, just for a friend 😉
With love and the utmost respect {adds more padding just in case},
    Joanne ❤

    • It is hidden in plain sight and it is a word the Queen of All Spoons uses for me…can you guess?

    Hello Kate,

Ignore that previous bad guess! I think I found it, but something seems missing….
